July 13 , 2008: Hear Them Roar, an anthology of fantasy, horror, and science fiction focused on female characters, is finally back in print, re-issued this month by Marietta Publishing. My tale, "Upon A Slender Stem," originally published in The Midnight Hour: Saint Lawn Hill and Other Tales (2005) is reprinted here. Buy it on Amazon or check out the e-book available from Books On Board.
On September 6th I'll be appearing at Between Books in Claymont, Delaware, to sign books and hang out with readers, writers, and any other creative folk who wander in. Also appearing and signing will be CJ Henderson, Danielle Ackley-McPhail, John Passarella, and Patrick Thomas, among others. Rumor has it that the long-awaited paperback edition of Warfear is also about to hit the streets this summer, coming from Marietta Publishing. This updated, improved edition of this anthology of weird war stories includes two of my tales: "A Manifest Destiny, or the Testament of a Continental Regular" and "The Tale of the Spanish Prisoner." May 11 , 2008: Bad-Ass Faeries 2: Just Plain Bad is now available at Amazon.com. This Faeries follow-up features my short story, "The Way of the Bone," which introduces Gorge, a fallen faerie seeking revenge against his betrayers through music-based magic (and hard-edged, Goth/punk/metal music at that). My tale opens the anthology and inspired the cover painting. The artist's depiction of Gorge is quite different from how I see him, but it's a powerful, striking piece in it's own right (and definitely "bad ass"). If you'll be at Balticon this month, don't miss the BAF2 Launch Party Sunday night.January 3 , 2008: A new review of Dark Furies, which includes my story, "Gray Gulls Gyre," has just been posted. Thanks to Jeff Edwards for the kind comments. Happy New Year!September 22 , 2007: I'll be appearing with some of my fellow Bad-Ass Faeries contributors as part of a panel discussion at the Writers Corner in Doylestown, PA, next Saturday, 9/29. A signing session will follow at the nearby Doylestown Bookshop.Breach the Hull, an anthology of military science fiction, which includes my story "Killer Eye," is now available in e-book format at DriveThruSciFi.com. The print edition will be officially released at Philcon in November. September 12 , 2007: The aptly named SpaceWesterns.com has posted my tale, "The Law of the Kuzzi," set in the Byanntia universe created by Bruce Gehweiller. Originally published in No Longer Dreams, it is represented here as part of the Byanntia sequence, with other stories written by CJ Henderson and Mr. Gehweiller.Byanntia is a frontier world where human colonists struggle for survival against a harsh environment and strange, native lifeforms. "The Law of the Kuzzi" tells the story of an early encounter between Kuzzi (Byanntia's intelligent natives), the colonists, and a band of illegal hunters. Read it here. Many thanks to Nathan Lilly for his excellent work on the site and his enthusiasm for Byanntia. August 8 , 2007: Presenting the full table of contents for The Dead Walk Again:
July 30, 2007: The Dead Walk Again is now available. Scroll down to see the cover and more info, or click here to order a copy from Amazon and chow down on the zombie goodness. Also now available is Crypto-Critters (Volume 2), including two of my short stories, "An Account of Two Deaths," and "Swamp Hoppers." This follow up to last year's Crypto-Critters (Volume 1) is also available for order on Amazon. June 18 , 2007: Back in 2004 my story "The Dead Bear Witness" (originally published as a chapbook) was collected in The Dead Walk, an anthology of zombie stories published by Baltimore-based Die Monster Die books. The Dead Walk was a Shocklines Bestseller for that year and my story (plus my second contribution, "Resurrection House") garnered some really nice reviews. Now, three years in the making and coming this summer is The Dead Walk Again, which will include my novella, "The Dead in Their Masses," a direct seqeul to "The Dead Bear Witness," though you don't need to have read one to enjoy the other. Also featured will be stories by Adam P. Knave, Nate Southard, John French, John Sunseri, Patrick Thomas, CJ Henderson, and others. But really, I've said too much, because look at this cover...[which I moved up...] I think that says it all. (The artist is Stephen Blickenstaff, famous for illustrating the album cover for The Cramps' Bad Music for Bad People.)
May 5, 2007: I have a new story out this month, "Sally Smiles," in the all-new anthology Bad-Ass Faeries (yes, that's really the title!), available on Amazon. "Sally Smiles," a tale of the Midnight Hour, is my first foray into writing "faerie fiction." It's a story about love, demons, romance, and childhood dreams. Here's the full scoop: Clap Your Hands...Now! Because you better believe the world is full of Bad-Ass Faeries! Toss out your childhood notions of faeries that are all goodness and light. No golden pixies clothed in gossamer, dancing on the wind, here to make the rainbows shine and the birds sing. These tales are of faeries on the raw edge, battle-worn and in black leather, with a glimmer of darkness in their eyes, if not their very hearts. Featuring the works of Monica Richards (of Faith and The Muse), Adam P. Knave, Lee Hillman, Den C. Wilson, Brian Koscienski, Christ Pisano, Jeff Lyman, Keith R.A. DeCandido, Jesse Harris, Lorne Dixon, L. Jagi Lamplighter, James Chambers, Vincent Collins, Elaine Corvidae, R. Allen Leider, Danielle Ackley-McPhail, John Sunseri, Patrick Thomas, and the supernatural CJ Henderson.
The editors are sponsoring a contest for readers to win faerie statues signed by cover artist Amy Brown or hand-made, life-sized faerie wings.
April 11, 2007: Welcome to my redesigned and (I hope) improved website. It's even more stripped down and to the point than its last iteration, so it should be a walk on easy street to find whatever info you might desire. I've got quite a few irons in the fire these days, with more than half a dozen short stories and one major novella confirmed for publication this year. A few other projects I'll be announcing as they become more concrete. As always your feedback is welcome. Drop me a line at jimchamb (at) optonline.net with any comments.I'm simultaneously launching a blog to compliment my website. There I'll be posting commentary on writing, horror, sci-fi, comic books, movies, music, convention occurrences, and occasionally even a snippet from that odd and unpredictable place known as "the real world." This space here will be reserved for general news and announcements about my writing and other projects, while more casual public offerings will be surfacing in my journal.
